Abstract

Aim: This study aims to compare haematological parameter of antiretroviral (ARV) naive HIV patients with those on ARV therapy and to compare the impact of AZT based ARV regimen with those of non AZT based regimen on haematological parameters.
Method: Haematological parameters of 145 HIV subjects including 115 patients on ARV therapy and 30 ARV naive patients were were evaluated using Sysmex automated haematology autoanalyzer. Results were analysed with SPSS version 16.
Result: Haemoglobin, red cell indices and WBC counts were significantly increased in patients on ARV. AZT based therapy is significantly associated with decreased RBC count, neutropenia and increased red cell indices. CD4 count correlated positively with WBC and lympocyte count and negatively with age and mean platelet volume of HIV patients.
Conclusion: ARV therapy impacts positvely on the haematological parameters of HIV patients however neutropenia is a common adverse event especially with AZT based therapy
