ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHIC ABNORMALITIES IN ACUTE STROKE CASES COULD IDENTIFY OBESITY AS RISK FACTO

Abstract

Aim: Most strokes are preceded by modifiable risk factors. Controlling these risk factors would
reduce the occurrence, morbidity and mortality of stroke. And obesity is a known risk factor for
stroke. However, obesity influence on ECG abnormalities in stroke patients is not available to me
in the literatures hence this study comes in handy; hence, the aim is, firstly, to determine the
prevalence of ECG abnormalities in obese stroke patients. Secondly, to see if obesity predispose
to increased ECG abnormalities in stroke cases. Thirdly, to determine if obesity predispose to
specific ECG abnormalities in stroke patients
Method: This was a cross sectional analytical study carried out in UBTH, Benin between January
2010 and 2013. The electrocardiographic abnormalities of one hundred and twenty admitted
stroke patients in this study categorized into obese and non-obese based on their waist
circumference. The data was analyzed using SPSS 21 software. A p – value of < 0.05 was
considered significant
Results: The most common ECG abnormality among obese stroke cases were left axis deviation,
left atrial and bi atrial enlargement present in four (50.00%) each. Left axis deviation in fortyfour (52.38%), ST depression in thirty (35.72%) and left ventricular hypertrophy in twenty-eight
(33.33%) of non-obese. There was no statistically significant difference except for left atrial and
bi-atrial enlargement.
Conclusion: The prevalence of ECG abnormalities in obese stroke patients is 66.67%. Obesity
does not predispose stroke patients to having increase ECG abnormalities. Obesity predisposes
stroke patients to having left atrial and bi-atrial enlargement on their electrocardiogram
