Abstract

Aim: To determine the eye health seeking behavior of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease on Dialysis in Benin City.

Methodology: This study was a hospital based descriptive, cross-sectional study carried in Benin City. A total of 96 consecutive patients were interviewed. The data generated were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Scientific Solutions (SPSS) version 16. The statistical significance was tested using the chi-square test. A p-value ˂0.05 was regarded as statistical significant. 95% confidence interval was used.

Result: A majority had not had an eye examination during the period of hemodialysis and developing an eye problem during hemodialysis did not increase the likelihood of visiting an ophthalmologist for an eye examination.

Conclusion: The patients in this study had a poor eye health seeking behavior despite having experienced eye symptoms during the course of the disease and its treatment.
